How to choose the right pesticide

Start with an accurate diagnosis. Sticky leaves and ants usually point to aphids or scale. Fine webbing and speckled leaves suggest mites. White powder on the leaf surface is powdery mildew, and yellowing with wilting in hot weather can be root disease rather than thirst. Treating the wrong problem wastes money and stresses the plant.

Then match the product to the problem and the crop:

• Contact or systemic: contact products work on what they touch, so coverage matters. Systemic products move inside the plant and suit sap-sucking pests hiding under leaves.
• Crop on the label: confirm your crop is listed, especially for vegetables and fruit you will eat.
• Formulation: EC, SC, WG/WDG, WP and ready-to-use sprays mix and behave differently. Ready-to-use sprays are easiest for balconies and villa gardens; concentrates make more sense on farms.
• Resistance management: rotate between products with different modes of action rather than repeating one active all season.

Using pesticides in UAE conditions

The local climate changes how and when you should spray. Summer temperatures above 45°C, strong sun and low humidity mean sprays can evaporate quickly, scorch leaves or drift. Spray early in the morning or in the evening, never in midday heat, and skip windy days.

Pest pressure follows the seasons. Whiteflies, aphids and thrips build up quickly in the mild growing months from October to April, when most vegetables are planted. Spider mites tend to explode in hot, dry spells. Powdery and downy mildew appear in humid coastal weather and in shade houses with poor airflow, while root rot is common where drip irrigation keeps heavy or saline soil waterlogged.

Water quality matters too. Well water with high pH or salt content can affect some products in the spray tank, so mix only what you need and apply soon after mixing. On sandy soils, soil-applied products move quickly with irrigation, so follow the label on timing.

Villa gardens and farms need different approaches. At home, start with spot treatments and ready-to-use or organic products. On a commercial farm, plan a programme across the season, record what you spray and when, and keep track of pre-harvest intervals.

Safety and responsible use

Read and follow the product label every time. Wear gloves, a mask and eye protection when mixing and spraying, store products in their original containers away from food, children and pets, and never pour leftovers into drains. Respect the pre-harvest interval stated on the label before picking fruit or vegetables.
