How to choose an insecticide for your crop

Identify the pest first. Sap-suckers such as whiteflies, aphids, mealybugs and thrips usually respond better to a systemic insecticide, because they feed under leaves where sprays struggle to reach. Chewing pests like caterpillars and beetles are often handled with contact products. Mites need a product labelled for them, which you will find in our Miticides/Acaricides section.

Next, confirm your crop is on the label, check the pre-harvest interval if you are growing food, and pick a formulation that suits your sprayer. Farms usually buy EC, SC or WG concentrates; small gardens are often better served by ready-to-use sprays.

Finally, plan rotation. Using the same active again and again is the quickest way to breed resistant whiteflies and thrips. Alternate between groups, for example a systemic product one round and a different mode of action the next.

Insect control tips for UAE farms and gardens

• Timing: spray at dawn or dusk. In summer heat of 45°C and above, sprays dry too fast and can scorch foliage.
• Seasons: whitefly, aphid and thrips numbers rise in the cooler growing season, so check the undersides of leaves weekly from October onwards.
• Shade houses: greenhouses in Al Ain, Liwa and the northern Emirates trap pests and humidity, so scouting and rotation matter even more.
• Water: high-pH or saline well water can affect some products in the tank. Mix fresh and spray promptly.
• Date palms: inspect crowns and trunks regularly and act early.
